  1. Astrid Floresby | November 30, 2011 - 05:53 AM

[2011/11/29 20:03] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): Alright, I will go ahead get started, I am Astrid, one of your friendly Storytellers here at Legacies. I've been RPing here for over a year now.
[2011/11/29 20:04] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): Tonight I am going to talk about using the LaRPS dice rolls in your RP.
[2011/11/29 20:04] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): First, why do we use dice rolls in Legacies?
    [2011/11/29 20:04] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): random element
[2011/11/29 20:04] Jeffrey Martiel: to avoid stalemates and godmodding
[2011/11/29 20:05] Kitari Elfenbeim: prevent god modding
    [2011/11/29 20:05] נαςσß Õレđђαм (davil.copperfield): it's fun
[2011/11/29 20:05] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): grins, mmhmm all of those things.
[2011/11/29 20:05] Jeffrey Martiel: Which reminds me, why is the recharge for dicerolls so long?
[2011/11/29 20:06] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): Because rolling too often will skew your character negatively, it's to prevent people spamming the dicerolls
[2011/11/29 20:07] Kitari Elfenbeim: to force ya rely more on rp then dice?
[2011/11/29 20:07] TriJin (trijin.bade): bingo. cookies go to kitari
[2011/11/29 20:07] Kitari Elfenbeim: Kitari Elfenbeim gasps
[2011/11/29 20:07] Kitari Elfenbeim: sorry boss didnt see ya here...
[2011/11/29 20:07] TriJin (trijin.bade): the cooldown on a die is 3 mins. but dont forget you have Abilities that cooldown for seconds :P
    [2011/11/29 20:07] נαςσß Õレđђαм (davil.copperfield): Yay Kitari
    [2011/11/29 20:08] TriJin (trijin.bade): a Bite cools down for 60 seconds, etc...
[2011/11/29 20:08] TriJin (trijin.bade): check your charry ssheets
[2011/11/29 20:08] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): nods, exactly, you need a post of RP to go with every dice roll, and the dice are TOOLS they are meant to aid, and enhance your RP, not replace it.
[2011/11/29 20:11] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): So, what I love about the dice, to be honest, is the random element.
    [2011/11/29 20:11] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): me too
[2011/11/29 20:12] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): We say you should roll the dice for "significant" actions
[2011/11/29 20:12] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): this can mean different things to each character
[2011/11/29 20:13] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): for instance, if you're walking across the street, you probably don't need to roll... but... what if your leaving the pub and falling down drunk?
[2011/11/29 20:14] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): or maybe you have a broken leg and the evil carriage driver is going way to fast
[2011/11/29 20:15] Kitari Elfenbeim: then I get roll a dice to snag ya coin purse ebfore anyne else sees it?
    [2011/11/29 20:15] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): XD
    [2011/11/29 20:15] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): well... there's a pickpocket action for that :P
[2011/11/29 20:17] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): the point I'm trying to make is that there is that using the dice is relative to each RP and character
[2011/11/29 20:18] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): any questions about using the dice?
[2011/11/29 20:18] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): does it have to be like big sgnifant or what decides what is significant
[2011/11/29 20:19] TriJin (trijin.bade): that's the 6 million dollar question. It is hard to answer. But most are obvious.
[2011/11/29 20:20] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): you decide what is significant. giving my husband a kiss... not so significant, trying to slap him for staring at a woman in ten bells... significant.
    [2011/11/29 20:20] נαςσß Õレđђαм (davil.copperfield): laughs
[2011/11/29 20:20] TriJin (trijin.bade): Such as walking across a clear room is very trivial if you have no injuries. But if you have a broken leg and there's a lot of furniture in the way, you may wish to roll your attempt.
[2011/11/29 20:21] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): grins, because you know what, sometimes we're clumsy and trip over a damn rug. or burn ourselves making tea. (burns herself all the time)
[2011/11/29 20:21] TriJin (trijin.bade): You could always ask in the OOC group if you are unsure. The majority of RPers here are quite experienced.
[2011/11/29 20:21] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): ah ok so more in the fact that it can have a signifant result rather than signifant irself
    [2011/11/29 20:21] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): exactly
[2011/11/29 20:21] TriJin (trijin.bade): yup, good way to look at it, Rosa
[2011/11/29 20:23] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): ok, so next I'm going to talk actually using the dice in RP. As I said every diceroll needs an RP post of an attempt before the actual roll.
[2011/11/29 20:24] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): The diceroll system is pretty accomidating to any attempt your creative minds can think of
    [2011/11/29 20:25] TriJin (trijin.bade): ACTION ATTEMPT -o- ROLL -o- REACTION
[2011/11/29 20:25] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): Astrid Muircastle feels like she should be wearing her dark lord shoulder pet
[2011/11/29 20:25] Kitari Elfenbeim: Kitari Elfenbeim giggles
[2011/11/29 20:26] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): I wondered about taht actually. If I should wait for others to rp an action to my initial rp before I posted the dice roll and then reaction
    [2011/11/29 20:26] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): in general
[2011/11/29 20:26] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): you post your action attempt, you roll
[2011/11/29 20:27] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): next player reacts, then they attempt
[2011/11/29 20:27] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): the exception is for stellar success and critical misses
[2011/11/29 20:28] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): ill talk about roll results in a minute and make why we do that clearer
[2011/11/29 20:28] Kitari Elfenbeim: if other person feeding off your RP wouldnt it usually be prefered they rp the reaction?
    [2011/11/29 20:28] TriJin (trijin.bade): they should
[2011/11/29 20:29] TriJin (trijin.bade): the roller cannot dictate the reaction of another... that would be godmod
[2011/11/29 20:30] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): yes, for example, if i were casting a spell on you, and I rolled a success... I cannot say nhow it affected you because i dont know your character
[2011/11/29 20:31] Ariel Liveoak: ...just that it DID affect the target somehow?
[2011/11/29 20:31] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): you would need to respect the roll, but perhaps that particular action affected you differently than I expected?
    [2011/11/29 20:31] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): exactly
    [2011/11/29 20:31] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): ok
[2011/11/29 20:31] Jeffrey Martiel: So then at what point during a fight does someone win? Or at least gain the upper hand?
[2011/11/29 20:32] TriJin (trijin.bade): the one who is standing... wins :P
    [2011/11/29 20:32] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): snickers
[2011/11/29 20:32] Ariel Liveoak: But if it's RP combat?
[2011/11/29 20:32] Jeffrey Martiel: You know what I'm asking
[2011/11/29 20:32] TriJin (trijin.bade): there is a health meter which is used to guage your point of defeat
[2011/11/29 20:33] Ariel Liveoak: That's always been my problem with RP combat... if no one wants to admit defeat, it could gop on for days.
    [2011/11/29 20:33] TriJin (trijin.bade): gauge*
[2011/11/29 20:33] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): ok... combat RP is a little different, there is a helth meter. you can pause it so it does not automatically regenerate
[2011/11/29 20:33] TriJin (trijin.bade): when you do the HUD damage rolls, it will affect your meter
[2011/11/29 20:33] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): if you are in combat, the ST will ask you to go into scene mode
[2011/11/29 20:34] Ariel Liveoak: Ariel Liveoak scrambles through her copy of the manual...
[2011/11/29 20:34] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): or doing any RP which might affect your health or strength...
[2011/11/29 20:34] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): the command is /9 scenemode on
[2011/11/29 20:35] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): that will pause the regen so that hits are more acurately displayed in the RP combat
[2011/11/29 20:36] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): If you want to know more about that, I would recommend you come to Marcus's class on wednesdays
[2011/11/29 20:36] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): strange question but how are things like me being a Mecha reflected in a fight? I know this isn't a fight class
[2011/11/29 20:36] Jeffrey Martiel: Ok. But what about using guns in combat? Under what skill would those fall?
[2011/11/29 20:36] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): he does a class specifically on combat
[2011/11/29 20:36] TriJin (trijin.bade): go to marcus' class on wednesday for combat. all is revealed then
    [2011/11/29 20:37] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): ok hopefully I can get there
[2011/11/29 20:37] Pearl Grey (pearlgrey): what class deals with how to respond when someone does a successful discovery on you?
[2011/11/29 20:37] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): the dice rolls factor in the stats, your race is factored into your base stats ;-)
    [2011/11/29 20:37] TriJin (trijin.bade): this class, Pearl
[2011/11/29 20:37] Pearl Grey (pearlgrey): good,
[2011/11/29 20:38] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): I intend to go over that Pearl
[2011/11/29 20:38] TriJin (trijin.bade): put the stats out of your mind. don't even think about numbers. just think about the story writing.
[2011/11/29 20:39] TriJin (trijin.bade): there are no winners, there are no losers... there is just mutual exchange of RP
[2011/11/29 20:40] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): that sounds almost obscene lol
[2011/11/29 20:40] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): ok, so going back to the dice rolls, the dice is that bluish thing on the right side of your HUD is your dice. You click that and get your dice roll menu, we're going to talk about the top three choice, Target/Self/Environment
[2011/11/29 20:41] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): now, what you choose is dependant on the RP attempt you posted.
[2011/11/29 20:42] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): This first question I call the WHO, it is what your attempt is against. Is it another character? a targetable object? Then it's target
    [2011/11/29 20:43] TriJin (trijin.bade): for the techie curios: http://larps.net/lc/topic/dice-roll-details
[2011/11/29 20:44] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): Are you attempting to do something to yourself? then it's Self, are you attempting something against a room? an object? then Environment
[2011/11/29 20:44] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): I have a lot of trouble clicking on people and getting them targeted, is there a trick to it?
    [2011/11/29 20:44] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): YES!
[2011/11/29 20:45] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): there is a command you can type... I use it almost exclusively /9tar ros
    [2011/11/29 20:45] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): OR
    [2011/11/29 20:45] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): or /9tar AnyCharName
[2011/11/29 20:45] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): if you type /9tar ast
[2011/11/29 20:46] TriJin (trijin.bade): it's always the first few letters of their CHARACTER name not avi name
[2011/11/29 20:46] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): you'll see my name pop up under target
[2011/11/29 20:46] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): what if there is more than one? Like if I'm near Rose
    [2011/11/29 20:46] TriJin (trijin.bade): then it's the closest
[2011/11/29 20:46] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): then i would type more
[2011/11/29 20:46] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): or yes the closest
    [2011/11/29 20:46] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): ok that makes sense
[2011/11/29 20:48] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): ok, so Pearl brought up discoveries... let's use that as an example
    [2011/11/29 20:48] TriJin (trijin.bade): or try /9nearest
    [2011/11/29 20:48] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): oooh that's easy Tri thank you
    [2011/11/29 20:48] TriJin (trijin.bade): http://larps.net/lc/topic/larps-shortcuts
    [2011/11/29 20:48] Kitari Elfenbeim: weird
[2011/11/29 20:48] Kitari Elfenbeim: that did not give closest
[2011/11/29 20:49] TriJin (trijin.bade): "nearest" depends on many factors not just the geographical location
[2011/11/29 20:49] Kitari Elfenbeim: Kitari Elfenbeim nods "just noticed that"
[2011/11/29 20:49] TriJin (trijin.bade): it's an internal dice roll too
[2011/11/29 20:49] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): ooh i see I did it twice and got two different results
[2011/11/29 20:50] TriJin (trijin.bade): so your character saw one and not the other
[2011/11/29 20:50] TriJin (trijin.bade): it adds a little intrigue into the focus :)
[2011/11/29 20:50] Kitari Elfenbeim: I like the indicator on the sentinel as to your target aswell as hud
[2011/11/29 20:50] TriJin (trijin.bade): anyway, i'll let you get back to class.
[2011/11/29 20:50] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): lets say we're sitting in the cafe, and I notice a clean linen scent
    [2011/11/29 20:51] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): ty Tri ^^
    [2011/11/29 20:51] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): Astrid Muircastle didn't know that one >.>
    [2011/11/29 20:52] Pearl Grey (pearlgrey): o.k.
[2011/11/29 20:52] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): now, i could rp, trying to figure out where the scent came from, or i could rp trying to see if it's pearl cause she's the one near me.
[2011/11/29 20:53] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): the first example, I would choose Environment the second, I would target Pearl and choose target
[2011/11/29 20:54] Astrid Muircastle: Astrid Muircastle tilts her head slightly picking up a scent of freshly cleaned linens, she looks around trying to tell where the scnet is coming from
    [2011/11/29 20:55] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): there's my RP attempt
    [2011/11/29 20:55] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): so, I'll choose Environemtn
[2011/11/29 20:55] Ariel Liveoak: ((Ariel Liveoak is Out Of Character))
[2011/11/29 20:56] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): now, if that was the WHO, the next is what I call the HOW, this is the method of the attempt
[2011/11/29 20:57] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): Physical - uses your stength, your dexterity.... this is where astrid messes up. She is incredibly clumsy -__-
[2011/11/29 20:57] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): is there a way to judge that? I mean I figured I was strong being an automaton
[2011/11/29 20:58] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): Mental - this is using your knowledge, your intelligence, and it also includes things like psi abilities
[2011/11/29 20:59] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): well... it's all factored into the roll.
    [2011/11/29 20:59] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): ok sorry for bothering
[2011/11/29 21:00] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): there is no way to really to judge as that is a secret only one person knows and will not be telling, but your actual characters strength is factored in
[2011/11/29 21:02] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): last is magical... these are supernatural powers
[2011/11/29 21:04] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): so, i'm using my ability to smell but i'm not just smelling, I'm mentally trying to follow the smell to it's source. This time I'm going to use Mental.
[2011/11/29 21:05] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): next is the WHAT, this is the action you are actually performing
    [2011/11/29 21:06] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): Harm

    - To negatively affect health, life or strength.
    Assist

    - To positively affect health, life or strength.
    Discovery

    - To obtain information or knowledge.
    Grapple

    - To grasp or hold without affecting health, life or strength.
    Influence

    - To affect mental state, hypnosis, physic or state of mind.
    Presence

    - To affect the target's presence. Teleporting, body deformations, other physical affects that has no harm, heal or change of mental.
[2011/11/29 21:07] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): these are taken directly for the link Tri gave you earlier, Whenever I have trouble deciding what to roll, i go back to that, and re-read the definitions
[2011/11/29 21:07] Astrid Muircastle: Astrid Muircastle focuses on their expert skill of Evocation, successfully performs a mental discovery of 9% on the environment.
    [2011/11/29 21:07] Ariel Liveoak: Neat.
    [2011/11/29 21:08] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): that is handy
[2011/11/29 21:08] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): mmhmm, and most importantly, if you have a question about what to roll, just type /9st
    [2011/11/29 21:08] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): We'll help!
    [2011/11/29 21:09] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): ^_^
[2011/11/29 21:09] Pearl Grey (pearlgrey): If I'm the target and you make a successful discovery on me, do I have to respond with some rp?
[2011/11/29 21:09] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): i need my floor scrubbed, will you do that?
    [2011/11/29 21:09] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): lmao
[2011/11/29 21:09] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): you can ask.
[2011/11/29 21:10] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): if astrid scrubbed your floors, you'd end up with a flooded house :P
[2011/11/29 21:11] Rosabelle: Rosabelle makes note to NOT ask Astrid
[2011/11/29 21:11] Kitari Elfenbeim: Kitari Elfenbeim stares at the giant pickle, knowing her curiosity always results in trouble tries to summon the self control to obey the "do not ride" sign....
[2011/11/29 21:11] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): ok, so in this case, I was doing the roll against the environment, the result led me to the the conclusion the direction of Pearl
[2011/11/29 21:11] Kitari: Kitari misses in performing a mental influence on themselves.
[2011/11/29 21:11] Kitari Elfenbeim: crap I got to ride the pickle
[2011/11/29 21:12] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): you wouldn't have to respond necessarily to that one, but you should respect the roll if they did a discovery with you as the target
[2011/11/29 21:12] Pearl Grey (pearlgrey): I am so confused about that. I don;t know what to do.
[2011/11/29 21:12] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): plausibility granting of course
    [2011/11/29 21:12] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): like what?
    [2011/11/29 21:13] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): Stellar Success

    - Almost perfect, better than expected.
    Success

    - A normal success.
    Bare Success

    - It was 50/50, this is borderline success.
    Miss

    - Was unable to hit the target, Could be out of range, out of power....
    Critical Miss

    - Missed the target and possibility of self damage (gun backfired).
[2011/11/29 21:13] Pearl Grey (pearlgrey): hmm....I recall now that players have successfully made discoveries on me and I did nothing....I'm not sure how that works.
[2011/11/29 21:14] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): yeah I have im'd if they are successful or rp'd something they would notice
[2011/11/29 21:14] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): ok hun a couple ways, and it depends on the rp. either, you could include the answer in an emote.
[2011/11/29 21:14] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): lets someone was inspecting the glow one me and got a success...
[2011/11/29 21:16] Astrid Muircastle: Astrid Muircastle smiles to the stranger, there's a faint light that surrounds her, but is unlike sunlight, it is more like a glimmer of magic that surrounds her.
[2011/11/29 21:16] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): or... if it's something you don't want to include in an emote, you can IM the person
[2011/11/29 21:16] Pearl Grey (pearlgrey): O.K., well no one said anything lol....I had no clue.
    [2011/11/29 21:17] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): smiles... it's okay
[2011/11/29 21:17] Pearl Grey (pearlgrey): just went on lalala
[2011/11/29 21:17] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): the thing about discovery, is all they are entitled to is what they ask for, so... if they're not specific... you're answer doesn't need to be specific.
    [2011/11/29 21:18] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): ok that helps
[2011/11/29 21:18] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): they don't get to know your sign and the color of your underwear because the got a success
[2011/11/29 21:18] Rosabelle 2.6 (rosabelle20): what if we're trying to discover something specific? like a heartbeat?
[2011/11/29 21:18] Pearl Grey (pearlgrey): that helps a lot.
[2011/11/29 21:19] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): then yes, if theyre doing an action that supports them learning it
[2011/11/29 21:19] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): ie... close enough to hear, looking for a pulse...
[2011/11/29 21:20] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): this goes back to what i was saying earlier... the dice support the RP
[2011/11/29 21:20] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): ALL they are saying is that they were successful in thier attempt
[2011/11/29 21:21] Pearl Grey (pearlgrey): I'll know better what to do next time it happens.
[2011/11/29 21:21] Astrid Muircastle (astrid.floresby): if their RP wasn't clear, the result might not be what the expect.
