[06:04 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Hello. My name is Beatrice Casteel and I am a witch here in Legacies. Your usual mechanical abomination of an instructor offered me this space to do a lecture specifically on witches. So i'm humoring her.
[06:04 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Before we begin, I would like to ask. How many of you are here becasue you are waiting to talk about wicca, or ask about it during teh course of this lecture?

[06:06 PM] Beatrice Theseus: This is about fantasy witchcraft, and witches in general. Wicca unforutnatly being a real thing will not be discussed. I do not know anything about it.

[06:07 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Witches throughout history have more often than not been sorcerers.

[06:07 PM] Beatrice Theseus: This means that the term 'witch' is often a title.
[06:07 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Rather than a dicipline.
[06:08 PM] Beatrice Theseus: However, I will be discussing witches AS a magical dicipline as well.
[06:08 PM] Beatrice Theseus: But generally the term has been used for female spellcasters or those who take the titleon themselves.
[06:08 PM] Beatrice Theseus: So much of what I say will be conjecture on my part, to give witches something more...concrete to go on.

[06:13 PM] Beatrice Theseus: The first set of witches i want to talk about quickly are you MYTHICAL witches.
[06:13 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Baba Yaga, the Bell Witch, witches of that sort.
[06:14 PM] Beatrice Theseus: These witches are oftne tremendously powerful, and come from mysterious origins. They are anti social by nature. But are known for being able to preform miracles
[06:14 PM] Beatrice Theseus: However more often than not with a mythical witch you ahve to pay something of value to accquire their assitance
[06:14 PM] Beatrice Theseus: And you must always be CAREFUL of what you ask for.
[06:14 PM] Beatrice Theseus: These witche often act like cruel genies in that they will go to the letter, rather than the spirit of your wish.
[06:14 PM] Beatrice Theseus: I strongly suggest not trying to play one of these witches. As they ahve poorly defined powers.
[06:15 PM] Beatrice Theseus: But if you are curious as to how a witch might act, you may want to look them up. I will point out that these witches are very 'witch' like.
[06:15 PM] Beatrice Theseus: They are cruel by nature, they are mysterious, and they often emply items to cast their spells. This is a reoccuring thing with us witches

[06:16 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Witches have been with us througout history, and have left a huge mark on us culturally. The most common form of witch many of us are familiar with in our child hood is the mythical witch, and the "item" witches
[06:17 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Item witches are the witches that employ cauldrons, they utilize potions and poisions. And it seems everything they do magic wise has a item or procedure that they must follow
[06:17 PM] Beatrice Theseus: These are the most traditional of witches, often employing a magical Familiar (often an animal) that will act as their eyes and ears over long distances.
[06:18 PM] Beatrice Theseus: They Wyrd sisters from gargoyles, (and shakespear) are a very good example of this type of witch
[06:18 PM] Beatrice Theseus: If you play this type of witch, you are one part alchemist, one part spell caster. Everything you do needs something, and most important is a greta deal of yor poewr comes from what someone pays as tribute to you for casting the spell.

[06:19 PM] Beatrice Theseus: i'll give you an example. Ocean comes to my shack and wants a potion to make her invincible.
[06:19 PM] Beatrice Theseus: So I concoct one using grave dust, the blood of a hero, and the scales from a basalisk.
[06:19 PM] Beatrice Theseus: But i need ocean to pay for the potion, it is this payment that really empowers the spell
[06:19 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Ocean has to give up a day from her childhood to me, perhaps so that I may become 1 day younger.
[06:19 PM] Beatrice Theseus: upon paying, i take ocean's day, and i give her her potion
[06:20 PM] Beatrice Theseus: These witches practice the old magic, where you require components. If you play one of these witches, I encourage you to play tricks, ask for strange payments, and often make yourself hard to find when someone needs you. These are you 'classic' witches.

[06:22 PM] Beatrice Theseus: now then you ahve your DARK witches
[06:22 PM] Beatrice Theseus: DARK witches are like snow whites mother.
[06:22 PM] Beatrice Theseus: these witches are often "classic" item witches, but everythinga bout their power is selfish.
[06:23 PM] Beatrice Theseus: They enact their abilties, but they make the payments themselves.
[06:23 PM] Beatrice Theseus: In the instance of snow whites mother, her potion robbed her of her beauty, and it was implied it would take quite a bit for her to create the counter spell
[06:23 PM] Beatrice Theseus: until she countered it she was STUCK like that.
[06:24 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Malificent from sleeping beauty also is a DARK witch.
[06:24 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Her power clearly has a toll on her, and most notably i always thought she was quite insane.
[06:24 PM] Beatrice Theseus: if you play a DARK witch, know that you are effecitvly a mad scientist in witch form.
[06:24 PM] Beatrice Theseus: the difference between you and a classic witch is that where a classic witch is acting as a medium for someone else.
[06:25 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Dark witches often only use their powers for their own ends.
[06:25 PM] Beatrice Theseus: You go to a classic witch to get a token for love, for a potiion, or advice. But you AVOID Dark witches. They ar deeply powerful, but are usually only able to use their powers from themselves. And they pay their own prices

[06:25 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Every witch I give you will have the concept of PAYMENT.
[06:26 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Witch powers have to be fueled, often by magic but also by something personal. Either payment from the contractor, or a payment from the witch herself. Witches often sacrifice something for their powers.
[06:26 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Are we all on the same train thus far?

[06:28 PM] Beatrice Theseus: now lets talk about your mroe salem-eque witches
[06:29 PM] Beatrice Theseus: These are Pact Witches
[06:29 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Pact Witches are interesting becasue they get their power by making bargains with other forces
[06:29 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Stereotypically demons and dark powers, in order to get their abilities
[06:30 PM] Beatrice Theseus: With each now power a wtich gains, they have to bargain with that same demon, or perhaps another demon in order to gain it.
[06:32 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Pact witches are some of themost famous familiar users.
[06:32 PM] Beatrice Theseus: but their familiars are foten very strange. Imps, or winged cats
[06:32 PM] Beatrice Theseus: If you are a pact witch, you are probably trying to cheat your way or renegotate your pact.
[06:33 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Pehraps you perform services for others. But if one of your deals was you had to give away part or all of your soul when you die, you may be stealing bits of other peoples souls
[06:33 PM] Beatrice Theseus: so that you can prsent that instead of your own
[06:33 PM] Beatrice Theseus: If you are in to darker erotica, maybe the time will come when your demon or pact benificiary will get the love jones
[06:33 PM] Beatrice Theseus: and guess who gets to be his temporary demon love slave?
[06:34 PM] Beatrice Theseus: So perhaps you are trying to find someone to replace you
[06:34 PM] Beatrice Theseus: jOr maybe it steals your years from you, so you steal years from others. Pact witches are fun to play because they are tricky. VERY tricky
[06:35 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Pact witches are often very powerful as well
[06:36 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Expecially because the benefactors often like giving their witches a great deal fo power to get them hooked on barganing for more.
[06:37 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Are we set there?
[06:37 PM] Atrum: "nods"
[06:37 PM] Beatrice Theseus: These are the witches that are most often sought to be burned at the stake
[06:38 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Your witches that were supposidly having intimate relations with satan
[06:38 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Another type of withc is the Nature Witch or Natural Witch
[06:38 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Natural Witches are more or less one part sorcerer, one part druid.
[06:39 PM] Beatrice Theseus: This is as CLOSE to wicca as we will come in this. But many witches in myth like Hecate were actually goddesses, and when they were put in legends where they were not, they were more or less natural witches
[06:39 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Natural witches draw their power fro the earth usually, or the land around them. They use natrual energies and often have more element based abilities
[06:40 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Like all witches they may trade favors, as its in a witches nature to trade favors. But often they take more shamanistic approaches to things
[06:41 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Willow was more of a natural witch
[06:41 PM] Beatrice Theseus: If you noticed when she used her powers cruely, she paid a heavy price
[06:41 PM] Beatrice Theseus: And thats the price nautral witches have to deal with
[06:41 PM] Atrum Anton: Wouldnt that be what the "Charmed ones" would fall under?
[06:41 PM] Beatrice Theseus: YYes, that is roughly what I think the charmed ones would fall under as well
[06:42 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Natural witches have a problem that if they use their powers "wrongly" as determined by the nature of their abilities, they suffer.
[06:42 PM] Beatrice Theseus: perhaps their spells backfire.
[06:42 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Or perhaps they suffer pain, or corruption.
[06:42 PM] Beatrice Theseus: In their case they pay ONLY when they break the rules
[06:42 PM] Beatrice Theseus: And if you play a natural witch you need to determine what your rules are
[06:43 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Perhaps you have the 7 fold rule, or a Rule of 3. If you use your pwoers to harm, it will revisit you 7 fold, or in times 3 of what you have done
[06:43 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Pehrpas you are fobidden from making people fall in love, or someone you love will have their love ruined.
[06:43 PM] Atrum Anton: I normally follow the 10 fold rule. what you do unto others come back 10 fold when i play as a witch
[06:43 PM] Beatrice Theseus: A very good rule to have
[06:44 PM] Beatrice Theseus: So in the case of natural witches, especially if its jsut a blank 10 fold rule
[06:44 PM] Beatrice Theseus: they often use their powers sparingly
[06:44 PM] Beatrice Theseus: becasue the good and bad, come back on them.
[06:44 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Natrual witches have an advantage. As an item witch you have to cast out of a book, or use a cauldron or a avariety of other tools
[06:45 PM] Beatrice Theseus: As a pact witch you have to bargain for your powers
[06:45 PM] Beatrice Theseus: and as a Dark witch you have to research your abilities, and you still pay.
[06:45 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Natural witches just sort of train themselves to become stronger, and as long as they stick to the rules they are fine.
[06:45 PM] Beatrice Theseus: If you play a natrual witch remember, if you are breaking your rules it WILL suck. Play accordingly
[06:46 PM] Beatrice Theseus: It may be fun to play a nautral witch that has trouble staying within her rules, and as such is often struck down.
[06:46 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Calamity breeds humor, and often good rp

[06:47 PM] Atrum Anton: it might fit into this as a spell caster t ype i used to rp was wondering if it would fit into the lines of a witch

[06:48 PM] Atrum Anton: It was one, who used a book, as well as potions and such, but for a direct spell, had to pay the cost, the Cost of direct spells was of blood.

[06:49 PM] Beatrice Theseus: I also believe that boys can hold the title of Witch
[06:49 PM] Beatrice Theseus: though often they are refered to as Warlocks

[06:50 PM] Beatrice Theseus: you put your silly relality in your pocket and don't bother me with it. or i shall tur you into a toad

[06:52 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Now I will adress another type of witch. which is a specialty witch. Its the type of witch I am.
[06:52 PM] Beatrice Theseus: It is refered to as an Endless Witch
[06:52 PM] Beatrice Theseus: And an Endless Witch is just that...they are a type of witch that more than often utilize some items, but also a great deal of their power is more or less 'real' magic
[06:52 PM] Beatrice Theseus: as in they simply do it
[06:53 PM] Beatrice Theseus: However endless witches are very similar to mythical witches, in that they often remember times of legend. an endless witch (at least I) comment on having lived during the times stories would be made of.
[06:53 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Endless witches all sacrifice something in order to gain their power.
[06:54 PM] Beatrice Theseus: I the case of myself I sacrificed my actual body. And so I have my soul in a mask that must be placed on victims so that I may steal their bodies and live again.
[06:54 PM] Beatrice Theseus: My sister Lenora sacrificed her freedom. And is a servant to her sisters effectivly forever.
[06:55 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Endless Witches are a form of witch that acts as a mythical witch, but their powers are often specalized. They make traditional story book witch spells and potions but each endless witch receives a title by which they are known. It is what they specalize in.
[06:55 PM] Beatrice Theseus: I am the Witch of Veils as in the veil between things.
[06:55 PM] Beatrice Theseus: My sisters are the Witch of Song, and the Witch of Metamorphasis.
[06:55 PM] Beatrice Theseus: This is important, the Witch of Songs can only use her powers thorugh music.
[06:56 PM] Beatrice Theseus: And I myself have a very particular weakness.
[06:56 PM] Beatrice Theseus: I require belief in witches to grow stronge
[06:56 PM] Beatrice Theseus: My exisence can be disproven.
[06:56 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Its the price of pay for having a great deal of power.
[06:56 PM] Beatrice Theseus: What you PAY as a witch balances out the amount of strength you usually posess.
[06:57 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Also *cough* i'm looking for an apprentice.
[06:57 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Now then, those are the general types of witches, as catagoriezed for easy memory.
[06:57 PM] Beatrice Theseus: any questions? we have one more part to cover

[06:59 PM] Beatrice Theseus: This may be strange, I was looking at the other creature lectures, and i noticed that witches share something in common with them
[06:59 PM] Beatrice Theseus: We have weaknessess
[06:59 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Its one of those...witch things
[06:59 PM] Beatrice Theseus: In Lenora's case she has the loss of her freedom, and another terrible restriction on her.
[07:00 PM] Beatrice Theseus: I do not have a real body
[07:00 PM] Beatrice Theseus: And while i am extremely difficult to kill, i have to experience the time spent in the mask.
[07:00 PM] Beatrice Theseus: The witch of Metamorphasis is barely HUMAN.
[07:00 PM] Beatrice Theseus: And we are quite powerful, we are refered to as ENDLESS Witches...and yet we are limited in our own way
[07:00 PM] Beatrice Theseus: the same is true for MANY other witches
[07:01 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Baba Yaga, the prolific russian witch cannot harm those who are pure of heart.
[07:01 PM] Beatrice Theseus: The wicked witch of the west (one of my personal heroes) was able to be defeated with a bucket of water
[07:02 PM] Beatrice Theseus: If you play a witch
[07:02 PM] Beatrice Theseus: I strongly suggest giving yourself a quirk or weakness
[07:02 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Perhaps you can't lie.
[07:02 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Beatrice can't.
[07:02 PM] Beatrice Theseus: So i learn to stretch the truth.
[07:02 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Maybe your powers don't work during daylight.
[07:02 PM] Beatrice Theseus: or you can't charge someone if they speak your name once.
[07:03 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Perhaps you are powersless without your tools.
[07:03 PM] Atrum Anton: afk a sec
[07:03 PM] Beatrice Theseus: it is this additional weakness that makes us witches very dynamic and very interesting to play
[07:03 PM] Beatrice Theseus: We are spell casters, but we are very unique in how we go about it
[07:03 PM] Beatrice Theseus: and also how we seek to acheive our goals.
[07:04 PM] Beatrice Theseus: I URGE many of you to consider playing a witch,or experimenting with the ideas I've given you
[07:04 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Incidently the Wicked Witch counts as an "item" style witch
[07:04 PM] Beatrice Theseus: All of her magic was really based around things she possessed.
[07:05 PM] Beatrice Theseus: right down to the iron rod she uses to trip dorthoy, causing one of her slippers to fall off. Dorthy of course over reacted and threw water on the witch.
[07:05 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Very unsportsman of her, I should think.
[07:06 PM] Beatrice Theseus: My personal favorite would be the moon and daylight rules.
[07:06 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Your powers may not work in daylight, or pehraps as the moon gets closer to full, your spells become stronger.
[07:06 PM] Beatrice Theseus: Either way, the general air of a witch is to not be understood. Our magic is different, and the less people understand us, paradoxially the more fufilling it /is/ to be a witch.
[07:07 PM] Beatrice Theseus: I'm not exactly sure how well of a discourse on witches tha twas.
[07:07 PM] Beatrice Theseus: but does anyone have any questions for me?
