  1. Faith Diesel | October 12, 2010 - 03:05 PM

    [17:06] Genesis Barthelmess: Alright then
[17:06] Genesis Barthelmess: Today probably will be a short lecture
[17:06] Genesis Barthelmess: as there are only 4 of you here
    [17:06] Genesis Barthelmess: So
[17:06] Genesis Barthelmess: We'll just jump right in, if that suits you all?
[17:07] Nicolie Luv: fine by me
[17:07] Genesis Barthelmess: So you've finished burning down the orphanage, killed everyone within reach for the past 6 hours.
    [17:07] Meridiana Xekri: sure
[17:08] Genesis Barthelmess: Everything around you is burning death and screaming oblivion.
[17:08] Genesis Barthelmess: The enemy is defeated and people have gathered around to tell you what a terrible evil you are.
[17:08] Genesis Barthelmess: They rail at you and tell you "YOU GODDAMN VILLAIN"
[17:08] Genesis Barthelmess: And you correct them and tell them You are the HERO here.
[17:09] Genesis Barthelmess: Well guess what?
[17:09] Genesis Barthelmess: YOU MIGHT BE RIGHT
[17:09] Genesis Barthelmess: So what /is/ an anti hereo?
[17:10] Genesis Barthelmess: An anti hero is just that. A hero. However an Anti-hero is a deconstruction of the basic hero componets.
[17:10] Genesis Barthelmess: Where hero may not ever lie, the anti-hero sees nothing wrong with that. Where a hero may not kill, the anti hero may kill everyone who is in the way. They may even believe in collateral damage.
[17:10] Genesis Barthelmess: So can any of you name someone you think is an anti hero?
    [17:11] Nicolie Luv: Darth Vader
    [17:11] Meridiana Xekri: lol
[17:11] Genesis Barthelmess: Darth Vader Was a villain actually, then a hero.
[17:12] Genesis Barthelmess: He never technically straddled Anti-hero territory, he's more of a redeemed villain.
[17:12] Nicolie Luv: what about Dog the Bounty Hunter
    [17:12] Fox Onizuka: the Punisher
[17:12] Genesis Barthelmess: but as you can see, there line is REALLY thin.
    [17:12] Genesis Barthelmess: THE PUNISHER
    [17:12] Genesis Barthelmess: GOLD STAR
[17:12] Genesis Barthelmess: I haven't seen much of dog the bounty hunter
[17:12] Genesis Barthelmess: So i'll give you a strong maybe.
[17:12] Genesis Barthelmess: Kratos from god of war is actually an anti-hero
[17:13] Nicolie Luv: I'm so drawing a blank and I have tons of movies
[17:13] Genesis Barthelmess: An Anti hero is working for the greater good. They are moving towards a positive goal. They simply use more negative means to accomplish these facts.
[17:13] Genesis Barthelmess: dirty Harry, is an anti-hero
[17:13] Reginald Kray: ((Ilmarinen Onedin has entered the area.))
    [17:14] Genesis Barthelmess: Welcome Regi.
[17:14] Ilmarinen Onedin: not regi Reginald
    [17:14] Ilmarinen Onedin: :P
[17:14] Genesis Barthelmess: An Anti hero seperates itself from the hero Villain in that the Hero Villain is not a real hero. It is in fact a Villain that is PRETENDING or ASSUMES that they area hero. But actually are the antagonist of the story.
[17:15] Genesis Barthelmess: Anti heros, have some villainy components to them. But they are not technically villains. They just chose to use more destructive methods to manage their goals.
    [17:15] Genesis Barthelmess: So.
[17:15] Genesis Barthelmess: Going back to our first example
[17:16] Genesis Barthelmess: If the Orphanage was a front for the Villain, the nit makes sense to the anti-hero to burn it down
[17:16] Genesis Barthelmess: The orphans will have to take one for the team
[17:16] Genesis Barthelmess: The Towns people might have been helping the villain.
[17:16] Carys Blackheart: oh so like john spartin in demolition man
    [17:16] Genesis Barthelmess: yes
[17:16] Genesis Barthelmess: VERY MUCH SO
[17:17] Genesis Barthelmess: So when the anti-hero starts picking off villagers who he knows are in leauge, thats not a good thing to do.
[17:17] Genesis Barthelmess: they may just be dumb
[17:17] Genesis Barthelmess: But the anti-hero doesn't care
[17:17] Genesis Barthelmess: Where as the Hero does the right thing becasue its right.
[17:17] Genesis Barthelmess: The Anti-hero often does it becasue they are PISSED OFF
[17:17] Genesis Barthelmess: Heroes out for revenge often become anti-heroes
[17:17] Genesis Barthelmess: heroes that believe in absolute law, often anti heroes.
[17:18] Genesis Barthelmess: Its a difficult line between Anti Hero, and Hero Villain. But it DOES exist
[17:19] Genesis Barthelmess: Anti heroes are often gritty.
[17:19] Genesis Barthelmess: They are often dark, and they reject the authority of others. They often believe in their own ways, and refuse to compromise them.
[17:19] Genesis Barthelmess: Now to incoproate elements of an Anti hero into your persona
[17:20] Genesis Barthelmess: Just remember that an Anti hero runs COUNTER to what others assume as heroic virtue.
[17:20] Nicolie Luv: sometimes you gotta make a mess to clean up one
    [17:20] Genesis Barthelmess: Exactly
[17:20] Genesis Barthelmess: Well i blew up the orphange
[17:20] Genesis Barthelmess: Well, no more killer orphan assasins are being made
[17:21] Genesis Barthelmess: so its all good
[17:21] Genesis Barthelmess: btw, i'm not cleaning that up
[17:21] Genesis Barthelmess: Thats your problem
[17:21] Genesis Barthelmess: Thats an anti hero thing
[17:21] Genesis Barthelmess: Anti Heros often notoriously don't CARE about cleaning up after themselves
[17:21] Genesis Barthelmess: they don't really take into account the effect of their actions, outside that it will make things better in the long run
[17:22] Genesis Barthelmess: DO NOT CONFUSE THIS WITH THE COMMON ASSOCIATION WITH VIDEO GAME ANTI HEROES OR SOME MOEVIE ANTI HEROES. IN THOSE INSTANCES IF A STORY HAS A VILLAIN, BUT IS SYMPATHETIC THE ARE REFERED TO AS THE ANTI HERO
    [17:22] Synaptiq Constantine is Offline
[17:22] Genesis Barthelmess: That is /not/ what we are dicussing. We are talking about a more refined approach to anti-heroics.
[17:22] Genesis Barthelmess: Anti heroes are often mavericks for whom the norms of society don't exist. Or they just don't give a fuck.
[17:23] Genesis Barthelmess: Your disgraced gaurd captain who fights dragons. Your gritty cop who believes in street justice. The mad inventor who is BLOWING UP much of the city in order to get the evil mayor to submit. These are anti heros
[17:24] Genesis Barthelmess: everone with me so far?
    [17:24] Nicolie Luv: grins yeap
    [17:24] Ilmarinen Onedin: nods
[17:24] Nicolie Luv: and being a constable that is nice
[17:24] Genesis Barthelmess: Okay, so. Thats pretty much the break down of the concept of anti heroes. Once you graps what it /is/ you actually can do it fairly easy.
[17:24] Genesis Barthelmess: just remember THERE IS A LINE WHERE YOU BECOME A VILLAIN
[17:25] Genesis Barthelmess: And in this sim, though we are all the hero of our own stories, the villain is generally accepted as the one who is overall a pretty evil ass can
    [17:25] Carys Blackheart: kicking kittens?
    [17:25] Genesis Barthelmess: yes
[17:25] Genesis Barthelmess: that is out and out villainy
[17:25] Legacies Contest Board shouts: New Contest 'Moderator Movie Casting' starting, please wait.
[17:25] Legacies Contest Board shouts: Voting for this contest cannot be done until the host allows it.
[17:25] Genesis Barthelmess: Now anti heroes can /be/ evil
    [17:25] Amira Langsdorff is Offline
[17:25] Legacies Contest Board shouts: CB Coeyman has increased the prize money to 1000L$ !!
[17:26] Genesis Barthelmess: Just as heroes can actually be evil.
[17:26] Genesis Barthelmess: heroics and anti heroics are measures of ACTION
[17:26] Genesis Barthelmess: where are good and evil are action + ethos
[17:26] Genesis Barthelmess: So if the equation of heroics is
    [17:27] Genesis Barthelmess: Action + Ethics + Morals + Bravery = Hero
[17:27] Genesis Barthelmess: Subtract something other than action from the equation
[17:27] Genesis Barthelmess: And you can usually come up with an anti hero.
[17:27] Genesis Barthelmess: Well then, any questions?
[17:27] Meridiana Xekri: does it have a z?
[17:27] Nicolie Luv: not here but I like that statment
[17:27] Genesis Barthelmess: That equation does not have a Z unfortuantely.
    [17:28] Meridiana Xekri: darnit
[17:28] Genesis Barthelmess: So can we generally graps how to be an anti hero now?
[17:28] Genesis Barthelmess: I guess the simplest way to consistantly be an anti hero is do good things, but in bad ways.
[17:28] Nicolie Luv: at least work toward it better
[17:29] Carys Blackheart: so if you take away bravery you would have a scardey cat anti hero?
[17:29] Genesis Barthelmess: yes, you would coneviably get a scary cat anti hero.
[17:29] Genesis Barthelmess: he runs from danger
[17:29] Genesis Barthelmess: she hides in corners
[17:29] Genesis Barthelmess: but when the chips are down, she'lll come through in some fashion
[17:29] Carys Blackheart: then turns around and kicks it in the shin if it suits her ?
[17:29] Genesis Barthelmess: pretty much yes
[17:29] Genesis Barthelmess: If she takes up poisoning to help with her fear of danger
[17:29] Carys Blackheart: ah perfect. I'll only do things if they won't ruin my dress
[17:30] Genesis Barthelmess: then that makes good anti hero matiral
[17:30] Nicolie Luv: I know a charecter like that now
    [17:30] Carys Blackheart: darn
[17:30] Genesis Barthelmess: As poison is commonly accepted as a NON-HEROIC THING
[17:30] Nicolie Luv: shes not brave but back her into a corner, and look out
    [17:30] Genesis Barthelmess: yes.
[17:30] Carys Blackheart: that sounds fun
[17:31] Genesis Barthelmess: Remember that morals are flexible. and easily discarded for the anti hero
[17:31] Genesis Barthelmess: Midn you when a hero does it? they often become villains.
[17:31] Nicolie Luv: umm kinda stands for what is right at the time?
[17:31] Nicolie Luv: no steadfast ruels?
[17:31] Carys Blackheart: hehe, the orphans would have to wait til my manicure is done
    [17:31] Nicolie Luv: rules*?
    [17:31] Meridiana Xekri: lol
[17:31] Genesis Barthelmess: There aren't many steady fast rules
[17:31] Genesis Barthelmess: unlike villainy and vampires
[17:32] Genesis Barthelmess: there are more subjective guidelines.
[17:32] Genesis Barthelmess: I guess the general rule is that to be an anti hero you have to run AGAINST generally accepted heroic practices
    [17:32] Carys Blackheart: question please
[17:32] Genesis Barthelmess: Go for it Carys
[17:33] Carys Blackheart: In most cases a hero and villian wouldn't socialize knowingly. Would a anti-hero and villian?
[17:33] Genesis Barthelmess: More than likely not.
[17:33] Genesis Barthelmess: Anti-heroes are still heroes
[17:33] Genesis Barthelmess: And villains still probably disgust them
[17:33] Genesis Barthelmess: I suppose under exteunating circumstances
[17:33] Carys Blackheart nods thank you
[17:34] Genesis Barthelmess: But thats the same as for heroes as well.
[17:34] Genesis Barthelmess: Any other questions?
[17:34] Nicolie Luv: so anti hero's kinda take the law into their own hands?
    [17:34] Genesis Barthelmess: Yes
    [17:34] Genesis Barthelmess: Exactly
[17:35] Genesis Barthelmess: Anti heroes do NOT follow the socially acceptable norms for justice
[17:35] Genesis Barthelmess: they /make/ their own rules
[17:35] Genesis Barthelmess: rather than follow others
[17:36] Genesis Barthelmess: Anti Heroes is a short subject
[17:36] Genesis Barthelmess: Simply because they are heroes
[17:36] Genesis Barthelmess: now anti hero tactics, what measure is the law? Crossing the line, those are topics that i could go on for hours with.
[17:36] Genesis Barthelmess: But those are all strongly subjective.
[17:37] Genesis Barthelmess: What I wanted to express to all of you today is /WHAT/ the anti hero is
[17:37] Genesis Barthelmess: And how do you become one.
    [17:37] Genesis Barthelmess: BAT MAN
[17:37] Lady Ophelia Lowenhart: ((Ophelia Applewhyte has entered the area.))
[17:37] Genesis Barthelmess: we forgot batman
[17:37] Ilmarinen Onedin: disembowling rapists count?
[17:37] Genesis Barthelmess: Batman is a classic anti hero
    [17:38] Nicolie Luv: the HUlk
[17:38] Genesis Barthelmess: pretty much any undoe or extreme violence to the antagonist can classify you as an anti hero.
[17:38] Genesis Barthelmess: The hulk is more of a missunderstood hero. He doesn't atively follow his own code of justice
    [17:38] Genesis Barthelmess: well
[17:38] Genesis Barthelmess: you are right.
[17:38] Genesis Barthelmess: epending on who was writing him
[17:39] Genesis Barthelmess: Anti heroes are simple enough to cross into
[17:39] Genesis Barthelmess: but like EVERYTHING ELSE I try to impart on you, consistancy, constancy, and finesse are the defining points.
[17:39] Nicolie Luv: ok your going to throw something at me for this
[17:39] Genesis Barthelmess: sure go for it.
[17:39] Ilmarinen Onedin: the scarlet rorshach
[17:39] Nicolie Luv: but can vamps be anti heros?
[17:39] Genesis Barthelmess: Vampires can be anti heroes
    [17:39] Mysteria Spiritor is Online
[17:39] Genesis Barthelmess: And Rorschach is an anti hero yes
[17:40] Reginald Kray: "tosses a maxipad at luv'"
    [17:40] Meridiana Xekri: lol
[17:40] Nicolie Luv: whew cause I kinda like to play by my own rules as a vamp
[17:40] Genesis Barthelmess: Remember vampires aren't automatically villains.
[17:40] Genesis Barthelmess: your actions tdetermine if you are heroic or villanous.
[17:40] Meridiana Xekri: would vampire hunter D be considered an Anti hero?
[17:40] Nicolie Luv: grins no were lovers not fighters lol
[17:41] Genesis Barthelmess: Vampire hunter D is a CLASSIC anti hero actually
[17:41] Genesis Barthelmess: I'm pissed i forgot about him
[17:41] Ilmarinen Onedin: no he's squeeky clean
[17:41] Meridiana Xekri: cool. i got that right.
    [17:41] Nicolie Luv: OH yeah
[17:41] Genesis Barthelmess: He's an anti hero in that he's angsty
    [17:41] Nicolie Luv: dang anima
[17:42] Genesis Barthelmess: Being extremely angsty can merit you anti hero status. And he does bit someone at some point.
[17:42] Nicolie Luv: hard to find videos of him but the ones I've found are awesome
[17:42] Genesis Barthelmess: And has fallen in in his comic.
[17:42] Ilmarinen Onedin: jubei from ninja scroll?
[17:42] Genesis Barthelmess: Hmmm....H'es more of a Violent Hero.
[17:42] Genesis Barthelmess: but given everyone in ninja scrolls is a total asshole, he could very well count
[17:42] Nicolie Luv: I cant believe I have not related the two till now face plams
    [17:43] Genesis Barthelmess: Exactly
[17:43] Genesis Barthelmess: UsuallY will tell you not to follow that many examples from media
[17:43] Ophelia Applewhyte: if you would like your XP please put your HUDs on
[17:43] Nicolie Luv: what about Dr heckly and mr hyde
[17:43] Genesis Barthelmess: but in the case of anti-heroes you DEFINATLY can take cues from movies and various comic formats
[17:44] Ilmarinen Onedin: i don't think they count unless were talking about alan moore's interpetation
[17:44] Reginald Kray: "tosses a maxipad at luv'"
    [17:45] Nicolie blinks and ducks
[17:45] Genesis Barthelmess: Well thats the long and short of it. Anti Heroes. I think you all have a fairly good grasp on the concept.
[17:45] Ophelia Applewhyte: ok I am an ST so I need to know Reg, did you peel the sticky tab off? roll a PvT gross please
    [17:45] Meridiana Xekri: lol
    [17:45] Genesis Barthelmess snickers.
[17:45] Meridiana Xekri: I like her
[17:45] Genesis Barthelmess: we all like her.
[17:45] Genesis Barthelmess: isome of us more violently than others.
[17:45] Lady Ophelia Lowenhart: ((Nicolie is given 1000 experience points.))
[17:45] Genesis Barthelmess: So then, any last questions for me?
[17:45] Nicolie Luv: yes just wanna squeeze and cuddly her
[17:45] Lady Ophelia Lowenhart: ((Carys is given 1000 experience points.))
    [17:46] Meridiana Xekri: lol
[17:46] Nicolie Luv: pinch her cheeks
[17:46] Lady Ophelia Lowenhart: ((Genesis Barthelmess Nacht is given 1000 experience points.))
[17:46] Lady Ophelia Lowenhart: ((Reginald Kray is given 1000 experience points.))
    [17:46] Nicolie Luv: chuckles
[17:46] Lady Ophelia Lowenhart: ((Meridiana is given 1000 experience points.))
[17:46] Carys Blackheart: sounds like she should get hazard pay
[17:46] Carys Blackheart: or at least good medical
[17:46] Nicolie Luv: None for me I'm going hunting with the commissioner
[17:46] Meridiana Xekri: oh wow, we gets points for the classes?
