Previously we explored the various different types of evils, and what really constittues and evil character. today we're going to be dicussing something similar but extremely important.

And we can identify that pretty easily, or difficutly depending on the situation. What is good and what is bad ca nbe made into absolutes if we so desire. and played from that aspect."
[05:11 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: However, that does not address the ideas of "Light" and the ideas of "Dark" and today, i hope to open your minds, and spur some ideas as I may shatter some preconveiced notiions or just confirm what you know already.

[05:13 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: as we are existing in a gothic setting the concept of darkness is very prevealanet. It permates the build of the city, it seeps into te types of characters we make. And it helps shape our grasp of how we see this world. So then let me pose this question to you Saevus.

[05:16 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: I shall explain. To start what is Darkness? Darkness is loss. It is negativity. It is the things inside of us and outside of us that cause pain. That beget suffering. The things that are not natural...the ghost that haunts you.

[05:18 PM] Furio Ghost: Could you talk a little bit about the difference between creating a detailed and richly dark character versus making a character who just seems to all observers overly depressed / self absorbed / and boring in an "I wear hot topic" sort of way?

[05:21 PM] Furio Ghost: Draining souls to SURVIVE? Not evil. That's dark. Draining souls specifically to make your POWERS WORK.... I'd call that evil.

[05:22 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: See "evil is what yuo do with it it" And there is a stipulation as to what yuo do wit hsaid power. We'll address that later on
[05:22 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: Darkness can be a very fun, and very interesting attachment to a player. It can make you tragic, it can make you heroic, but the number oe thing it can do...IS GET PEOPLE TO TREAT YOU LIKE A JOKE. So lets get into that...the application of darkness.

[05:25 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: When applied to each other Sweet Faith now has become a dark character. If and ONLY if she does it right. Needing to vamp by itself doesn't make you dark. Its the tragety of it that makes her dark. Her unwillingness to exist in such a matter but her need to. It her struggle that makes her dark."
[05:26 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: Now. Additionally even if she EMBRACES IT, but decides to continue to be a 'good character' she now is just that. A 'good character' with a dark element. Faith has now become dynamic, she has a dimension to her that would not exist normallly, and another outlet for her play.

[05:27 PM] Varoona Valdez: you knoe you could use my character as an example. she fled from a bounty on her head but still embraces the legend that she had become

Having a dark ability is just an ability that causes suffering, either to you or to others. Or tapping into something that is considered negative. We all understand that?

[05:30 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: We'll use me as an example. Gen appears to be a regular character. She has a few things that make her tragic, but nothing really dark. UNTIL you start to talk to her more. The poor girl is a moral void. Whom is driven by her need to create and invent, and is mindless to the concequences

[05:31 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: But i am not consciously evil
[05:31 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: To build a mechanical doll we took a dying childs soul, and in order to save the child and power the doll, we stuffed it inside. Was that probably the right thing to do/

[05:32 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: But it saved the child, it lives on in another form, the action itself, was DARK.

[05:43 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: Riku from Kingdom hearts is an extremely bizzare example
[05:43 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: Everything that character has is a dark element, his personality, his clothes, HELL EVEN HIS POWERS.
[05:43 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: But he is CLEARLY a hero.
[05:43 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: He's a dark hero using dark powers, but it doesn't mean he's evil. Darkness /can/ and often /will/ be used for good
[05:44 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: 3.) allow your darkness to express itself. But never allow it to over take you

[05:44 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: What i mean is that if you say are hafl vampire, give yourself a heterocromia...thats where you eyes don't match. Or something weird on your face.

[05:45 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: And most of the time something you can't get rid of, and are FORCED to face.
[05:45 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: Thats not to say darkness can't become evil, and if it does, thats always a fun one too. -

[05:56 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: In no way am I saying that its wrong. Its just a part of this lecture to let you know that Light and Dark exist COMPLETELY Independently from the concepts of Good and Evil

[05:57 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: I won't get into the particulars of playing Light, Chaos, Evil characters. They are hard. And really just be temporary...law and chaos is a different lecture.
[05:58 PM] Genesis Barthelmess: Right now all i want you to do is remembe that elements of darkness, and elements of light are independent from an idea of good or evil. And do not condemn you to either side. But they CAN enhance your characters image, feel, and story.
