Cold pains in the night...

    Nathaniel Ballard struggles his way to consciousness, fighting off the fog of the dreams, remembering little but the intense sense of loss and a burning cold sensation around his wrist. He stares muzzily at the scar there and rubs it, feeling the pain again. Words from a poem come unbidden into his head. "Oh captain! my captain!..." Again, the sense of loss surges back from the dream as he thinks of the one who gave him the scar. Cold grips his heart and squeezes as he wonders, what has happened? He sits on the chair by the fire, trying to drive away the cold that gripped him, tracing the line of the scar on his wrist. "Oh captain! My captain!" He mutters to himself, frowning as if trying to recall the rest of the words. He reaches into the drawer and pulls out a small volume of poetry and leafs through it, finally finding the page he sought, reading it aloud to himself.

    "O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
    The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won,
    The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
    While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
    But O heart! heart! heart!
    O the bleeding drops of red,
    Where on the deck my Captain lies,
    Fallen cold and dead."

    What little colour there was in his face drains away as he reads the last line. "Catt?" he cries out, fearfully. A pink-tinged tear appears at the corner of his eye. "Catt?" he cries again. He shoves the book into his pocket and heads for the streets, his face set in grim determination...
