"I'm not sayin' Elsie ain't a nice girl," said Jacob, as he finished rolling a cigarette and passed it to Moe, before rolling another for himself. "But is she the right sort for you? I got nothing against gypsies, mind, but how do you know she ain't gonna up sticks and go somewhere else next week?" Moe struck a match on his thumbnail and lit both cigarettes.
"She ain't like that Jake." replied Moe. "Her family have been in the same spot for over a year now. She got 'erself a job at the laundry. Anyway, we've only been walkin' out for a couple of weeks, so I ain't worried too much about the future."
"You should always think of the future, lad," said Jacob. "You know Ma always used to say..." He paused as he heard a door opening and looked up. "Watch out, 'ere comes Barnsie... Oh, never mind, it's just Ned." He leaned back and took another pull on his cigarette. "Anyway, as I was saying about Ma..." He was interrupted by Ned's voice calling from the balcony.
"Oi, Jacob, Moe. Get off your backsides and load five sacks of coal on the cart, then bring it round to the door. We've got some deliveries to make up." Ned trotted down the stairs to the warehouse, looking at his list and frowning. "Sheesh, what is the woman making with this lot?" He got down to the warehouse just as Jacob & Moe pushed the cart in. "Oh, and lads, put your bleedin' fags out! We're gonna be handling dangerous chemicals, so I don't want to take any chances." He shook his head in despair as both of them pinched out the glowing ends and tucked the half-smoked cigarettes behind their ears for later. He wandered over to the bonded section of the warehouse and unlocked the gate. "Ok lads, we want two casks of blood wine from out of here, and those two carboys, but be careful, they're full of concentrated acid." Moe looked puzzled as he and Jacob hefted the first cask.
"What's a carboy? And, what's concentrated acid?" He rolled the cask into a safe spot on the cask, then followed Jacob back to get the second.
"It's a type of bottle, specifically, those two over there," said Ned, pointing out two large bottles with handles and a wicker casing. "As for acid, it's a chemical that would dissolve your hand off in a few moments if you spill it, so be bloody careful." Ned looked at the list and walked over to one of the shelves, where he found two small bottle holders containing two two-pint bottles each. "One, two, three, four... two pints each... one gallon of mercury." He lifted one experimentally and decided to move them one at a time. placing them on the cart. "Oi, Jacob!" He called.
"Yes, Ned?" He replied, sliding the last carboy into place.
"Over by the door there, there's a crate of bottles of glycerin - the green ones. We need sixteen of them. Probably easier to take a few out and leave the sixteen in the crate. Get them loaded." He ticked his list and scanned the shelves. He nodded as he saw the boxes with the "Rogers Reagents" label. He took one full box, then opened a second and took out one jar of yellow powder. "Five pounds of sulphur. I think that's it." He walked back to the cart and placed the packages on it. He looked at the list and frowned. "You know, I don't think we should be carting this stuff around any old how, or leaving it unattended. Better check if anybody is in first." He sat down at the small desk by the door and quickly scribbled a note. "Here, Moe! Take this down to Doctor Foxtrotter's office behind the cafe. See if anybody is in to take the delivery, either the good doctor herself, or one of her assistants. If there is, then hurry back and take the cart down there. If not, leave the note and we'll just have to wait." He handed the note to Moe, who scurried off. Ned leaned back, pulled out his pipe and began to fill it. "So, Jacob. Did you get to talk to him about that young lady?"
