Ned visits the glass factory

Mr Barnes closed his ledger for the moment and reached into his drawer, pulling out a crystal tumbler and a bottle of expensive looking malt whisky. He looks up momentarily as he hears a door close at the back of the warehouse, then pulls another glass out of the drawer. He pours two generous measures as Ned comes through the door, shrugging out of his coat.

"How do, Ned? Your timing, as ever, is impeccable." He takes one glass and pushes the other towards Ned. Ned takes the glass and cups it in his hands, almost as though he were warming them on the glass, then takes a sip.

"Thanks, I need this. It's mighty raw out there." He takes another drink and sits down.

"Aye, that it is Ned. But, you'll be pleased to know that Jacob & Moe actually pulled their fingers out for once and got that shipment unloaded and stored in the warehouse, so that's one less thing you'll have to do tonight. How did you get on at Whitefriars Glass?"

"Not bad at all actually." Ned reaches into his pocket and pulls out a piece of cloth, unwrapping it to reveal a few shards of clear and coloured glass. "Spoke to a Mr Harry Powell, and he showed me around the plant."

"Ah yes, bright lad, young Harry," said Jackson, nodding. "I knew his grandfather when he bought the plant back in '34. A wise investment I thought, at the time. So, what did he have to say?" He reaches out and picks up the pieces of glass, looking at them on edge and squinting.

"Well, they've been experimenting with various glasses for scientific instruments as well as their normal glasswares and the stained glass," said Ned. "He thinks a square foot is a bit much to ask, but, he reckons that he could manage 8" square at 1/10th of an inch thick. It would have to be a special order, as he'd have to adapt from some experimental lamp glass, but he can do it for 80 coins for the clear and 100 for the red." He took another sip from his glass. Jackson purses his lips approvingly as he puts the shards of glass down and takes a mouthful of the whisky.

"I knew they would be the right people. Not quite the 1/16th inch that the Tinker wanted, but a lot closer than the cylinder glass would have been, if somewhat more expensive. Very well, send Jacob round to see him tomorrow. Tell him 30 coins for the clear cylinder glass and 40 for the red, or 100 for the thinner stuff and 120 for the red. Did you see anything else interesting?" Ned nods and pulls a cloth-wrapped package from his bag. He unrolls the cloth and pulls out two glass drinking vessels, pale green, with threads of thicker glass decorating the outside.

"Yes, it's a new line that he is developing, Venetian style. He sent a couple of prototypes along with his compliments." Jackson picked one of the glasses up and examined it with evident approval.

"Very nice," he said, putting it down. "In fact, I think we should... christen them, don't you?" He picks up the whisky bottle and pulls the cork out.

    "Excellent idea, sir. Excellent idea."
