[17:03:01] You: Well, welcome to my guest lecture, I'm Kev, this class is about improving your roleplay, about what roleplay is, and how to make it awesome, the labels, and terms of rp that you may not be familar with. Can anyone tell me, First and Foremost, what is Roleplay?
[17:04:32] נαςσß Õレđђαм: it's like writing a story in real time playing a character
[17:04:40] 'Sugah: hmmm.. okies i would assume it is playing role
[17:04:58] You: Roleplay is a game, in which participants assume roles of characters and collaboratively create stories. Participants determine these actions of their character based upon characterization, and the actions in Legacies succeed or fail for their characters as per the LARPS system and the Dice Gods. *grins* That's a very nice way of putting it too Jacob.
[17:05:06] 'Sugah: a character that isnt yourself
[17:05:37] Wren Noir waves at everyone
[17:06:03] You: Exactly Sugah, your character is not yourself, nor should it be. *wave* Welcome Wren. Now we're going to go over the Labels and Terms of Roleplay that you may or may not be familiar with.
[17:06:03] נαςσß Õレđђαм waves and smiles back at her
[17:06:06] 'Sugah: gr.. is missing bit so convo sorry
[17:06:28] You: RP--Stands for Roleplay. Kind of a duh, but not always simple if your newer.
[17:07:34] You: ST: Storytellers! The awesome people in this sim who lead roleplay and who helps guide roleplay here in Legacies, you can always contact an ST by typing in /9st , a little dialogue box will open, and you can type your message in there, one will get back to you as soon as they can.
[17:07:41] Jacob Oldham: ((Davil Copperfield is Out Of Character))
    [17:07:52] Peri is Online
[17:08:21] You: Okay, you guys get a turn, who can tell me what an NPC is?
    [17:08:37] 'Sugah: non player character
[17:08:48] Wren Noir: yup yup :)
[17:08:59] Wren Noir: you type fast, Sugah! lol
[17:09:26] You: Very good Sugah. Non Player Character, These characters are usually figures in RP that the ST's or other players can control. A great instance of an NPC is the Hospital has several interns, one is fondly known as Sid, he's a swarthy gentleman.
    [17:10:11] You: OOB, anyone?
    [17:10:48] נαςσß Õレđђαм: not me
[17:11:07] Wren Noir: Out Of Body... not there
[17:11:35] You: OOB is Out of Body, It is the only thing you can say if you have to step away in local on the rp floor. We do not use the terms AFK or BRB, we use OOB, out of body. It means you are stepping away for five, ten minutes. If you think someone else may wander up, it's a great idea to put it in your title using /9title OOB
    [17:12:13] 'Sugah: co not ooc?
[17:12:32] You: That's right, we don't want to break the immersion for other people Sugah, that's why it's just the one term.
    [17:12:49] 'Sugah: ok.
[17:12:56] You: Can anyone tell me what Para means?
    [17:13:14] 'Sugah: paragraph
    [17:14:10] BrittanyBliss: ((Back sorry))
[17:14:11] You: Very good Sugar, some people are very wordy, and descriptive, and these are paragraph posts in roleplay, which can take some time to post, so it's a great habit to get into to give the other person some time to type it up, not everyone is a speed typer.
[17:15:20] You: One-Liner, is the opposite of Para, It's a single line post. Sometimes a paragraph post is just too much, if you need to do something like open a door, a one line is a quick, small post.
[17:15:45] You: Mary Sue/Gary Sue, anyone ever heard these terms before?
    [17:16:19] 'Sugah: no.
    [17:16:22] Wren Noir: not me
    [17:16:27] נαςσß Õレđђαм: nope
[17:17:11] You: Mary Sue and Gary Sue is perfect characters, characters that have no flaws, and can do anything..these are usually pretty highly frowned upon. Why? Because they are boring. It's not fun to rp a perfect character. Rp Flaws and Personalities are what makes for better RP
[17:17:50] Mateem: They also tend to be gateways to powergaming and godmodding.
[17:18:50] You: The next is Powerplay , or as Mateem just mentioned, Powergaming. Powerplaying is controlling someone else's character- you are allowed to control your character, and your character alone. You may not, for instance. Walk up to someone and roleplay that you stab them in the face and tell them that they are dead. That is Powerplaying.
    [17:19:05] Mateem: *cough*
[17:19:12] Mateem: Actually Kev, that's Godmodding.
[17:19:38] You: Hmm, Or Godmodding, they are very similiar :) Powerplaying is also having an overpowered character. Such as..I am invinceable :)
[17:20:21] Mateem: Powergaming is an over powerful character. An example of a powergamer is someone who is an expert healer, great leader, can control all of the elements, harness the fires of hell and control holy light.
    [17:20:46] 'Sugah: 0.0
[17:20:51] Wren Noir: but what if that's what you truly ARE!?? **coughs and winks*
    [17:21:02] BrittanyBliss giggles
[17:21:02] You: Which is ..well..yeah. Boring. And not fun for anyone else.
[17:21:19] Mateem: The main thing that's troublesome with that is plausibilty.
[17:21:29] You: And Mateem is very right, I got those mixed up on my notecard, *baps self*
[17:21:42] Mateem: And like Kev said... it doesn't make for a very interesting RP.
[17:21:54] 'Sugah: well i go no problems there my character is perfect....ly stupid
[17:21:57] You: The last term is Despie, has everyone heard of a despie before?
    [17:22:05] Wren Noir: no
    [17:22:22] BrittanyBliss: nope
    [17:22:23] Saerrn is Online
[17:22:31] Wren Noir: <-- hopes it's short for 'designer pie'
[17:22:45] You: A Despie is someone who is desperate for romantic roleplay. That is their only goal. *grin*
[17:23:06] 'Sugah: lol wow that is half of gor..
    [17:23:11] Wren Noir: hehehe
[17:23:18] You: Oh I love you *smooch smooch* That's a Despie *laugh* Romantic roleplay is fine, but it's not the end all and be all of roleplay *grin*
[17:23:24] 'Sugah: oops did o say that outloua
[17:23:34] Wren Noir: and by 'romantic' do you really mean 'romantic' or is that a euphamism?
[17:23:51] You: a little of both Wren *laugh*
    [17:23:55] Wren Noir: gotcha
    [17:23:58] BrittanyBliss: hah
[17:24:07] You: Okay, the next bit is Stand Tips for Rp, how to make your rp more coherent.
[17:24:49] You: Spellcheck. Nobody wants to read the garbled mix of words that nobody can understand, typos are fine, and happen to all of us, but if you can't spell C-A-T, then please. Please use spellcheck. It will help. It is your friend. Some viewers even have a spellcheck feature, such as Phoenix.
    [17:25:15] 'Sugah: i cant use pheonix..*shrugs*
[17:26:56] You: Post Length: Quality folks, over quantity, always, but you should describe your character at length so people can get a feeling of who your character is, not only that but the area around your character, current appearance, personality, bits of history (No Think statements) Flaws, Qiurks---a great basis for each post is the who/what/where/when/why. Also make sure that you are replying to people that are posting at you, even if your replying that your ignoring them *laugh*
[17:28:06] You: Now, Think Statements. Thought Statements, or Think Statements, however you wish to call them, are known as Dead RP, Why? Because nobody can roleplay reacting to them. They are dead. They have no future, and they cause ooc drama. Please do't do them.
[17:28:41] You: and see, a typo, don't do them, even.
    [17:28:56] Wren Noir grins
    [17:29:11] Peri: don't correct typos?
[17:29:23] You: *laugh* Don't do think statements Peri ;)
    [17:29:31] Peri: ohoh
[17:29:43] You: Now, moving on, There are five pillars to roleplaying..the sheer absolute basics.
[17:29:56] Mateem: The best way I've heard to put it is "Write like an actor, not an author. You're describing for an audience, not a reader, don't put down anything that can't be percieved by the senses."
    [17:30:07] Wyld Frostwych is Online
[17:30:39] You: 1. Setting. The Setting is already predetermined for us. We are in London, The year is 1891. Your setting however, is also your location, The Cafe, The Bank, Your House. You can describe your reactions to these things.
[17:30:45] BrittanyBliss: ahhh that's a good way to put it Mateem
[17:31:14] You: And I love that saying Mateem, it's one of my favorite ways to think of it.
[17:31:26] 'Sugah: whay type the setting if you and the persond are in the same setting they alredy know what it is
[17:32:49] You: Well, a good reason would be is if your somewhere that changes the setting, you bump into the rocking chair at the ten bells, and it starts to rock, simple things of that nature--or maybe you cast a spell that drenched the area in water and suceeded.
    [17:33:10] 'Sugah: ah okies.
[17:33:27] Mateem: Or reacting to things that are already there. For example, it's November... it's cold outside baby!
[17:33:57] You: Yes sir, it's very cold...brrr...that's a setting, and if you don't rp it then people don't know that your using it, it's a great way to bring your characters to life.
[17:35:24] You: Pilllar two is Plot and Story. Your character has it's own story, i'm sure, and it's own background. The Plot however, is ever changing in Legacies, it evolves with the roleplayers within it, it is however, part of the five pillars of roleplayiing. Once you've been here a while you'll start to notice the plots behind the rps, and there are usually several going.
[17:36:25] You: Pillar three is your character, their background, their history, how they react. You are the only person that can rp your character, and so you become a pillar of the roleplays that you enter.
[17:36:28] Mateem: An important note - it's fine and well to give your character goals, but do NOT script your RP! It always leads to distaster and ends up being miserable for everyone inovlved.
    [17:36:49] Mateem: *involved
[17:36:50] You: *grins at Mateem* I was just typing that! *laughs and throws a cookie at him*
[17:37:08] Mateem: *takes the cookies and stuffs his face and shushes*
[17:37:17] Leigh Luv: peaks over the railing.."behave" :P
[17:38:02] You: Pillar Four is Other Players. Why do we mention this? Because it's a story...your character needs to reply to other characters and give them something to reply too. That is how we make coherent roleplay.
    [17:38:32] Morsmordre Furman is Online
[17:39:25] You: All of these things tie into the last pillar, Playing your character as he or she exits within the setting, working with other characters to make a good story. By writing a few paragraphs and then waiting for the other player to respond, and then the next player, after a while, the story will form into interactions that form players in a role, which is how we end up with roleplaying.
[17:40:27] You: Okay, so now question time, since your all being so quiet. Can anyone tell me what Improvisation is?
[17:40:46] Wren Noir: question: should I wait until everyone in the scene has posted before I post my next reply? Is there a 'polite' way to wait a turn or not?
[17:41:22] Wren Noir: (ack.. sorry.. I read up to 'question time' and just jumped in with one)
[17:41:26] BrittanyBliss: I second that quetions lol.
[17:41:27] Peri: coming up with something on the spur of the moment
[17:41:38] Leigh Luv: that is called round robin and depends on how many are in it and where you are
[17:42:28] You: It's usually a good idea to wait if you can Wren, if a player is bypassed they might feel ignored too, but yes, it depends, if your in a room with 30 other players, it makes no sense to wait to post.
[17:42:36] 'Sugah: i dont know .. i still trying ot figure the basics. so i have attempted talking ot many more then one person at a time
[17:42:44] BrittanyBliss raises her hand, "Question!"
    [17:42:52] You: Go ahead Brittany
[17:43:05] Leigh Luv: If I may I might be able to address that better
[17:43:06] Mateem: It's generally a good idea to wait until everyone has posted in a scene that way you know what everyone is doing, etc. For ecamples someone might be bleeding profusely from the neck from a gorey bite... but that's not apparent by the avatar.
    [17:43:27] You: Sure Leigh :)
[17:44:14] BrittanyBliss: If I am showing that I am thinking, is it okay to drop like a little line about the thought?
[17:44:39] Leigh Luv: If you are in the cafe or another location that is full of people restrict your RP to those withing a few meters of you no more than 5 the others would be back ground noise. ..and no Brittany no think statements are allowed
[17:44:55] Leigh Luv: but lets address the other situation more first.
[17:45:43] Leigh Luv: if there are only a few of you i the room let it flow with a natural round robin but if many start getting there it wouldn't make sence ICly for you to hear them across the room just because you can see the text
[17:46:15] Wren Noir: alright. That makes sense.
[17:46:53] Leigh Luv: this goes with the think statment as well....we are not authors but actors and can only respond to what is seen or smelled..your 5 senses...but when you think something...then you are talking to they people behind the computer not the characters around you
[17:47:06] Leigh Luv: and I will now give the class back to kev for it is his
    [17:47:12] You: *laughs* Thanks Leigh!
[17:49:06] You: One of the most important things in your roleplay however, is Your Character. It requires a foundation, or a personality, that you want to roleplay. A personality will sort of dictate how a character deal swith situations. For example, a sociopath character won't care who gets hurt in his quest for power, whereas a righteous goody two shoes will, and will go out of his way to help people as he goes. A character with an extreme phoiba of bats won't easily go into caves, whereas a character who adventured much in his childhood and is no stranger to the dark, will waltz right in.
[17:50:31] You: One important part of your character is knowing it, that their is a progression in the creation of yoru character that should be natural, and flow together. Having a bunch of traits just thrown together and duct tape will often cause jerky roleplay that does not seem smooth, or an unrealistic character, make your character make sense, is a good firm thing to remember.
[17:50:55] 'Sugah: so how do go about building your character..
[17:51:14] You: Well I've got some things to hand out at the end of class to help with that Sugar, fun things!
    [17:51:29] 'Sugah: ^.o
[17:51:59] BrittanyBliss perks up... fun things?
[17:52:12] Wren Noir perks up... things?
    [17:52:15] Wren Noir: ;)
[17:52:37] You: The next part is this, Growing your character. I mentioned just now that creating a solid foudnation for your character gives you a good model of how your character should react. But please, remember that your character is NOT a Rock! A rock character does not change no matter what he goes through--never learns anything, Let your character grow and change over the RP's you involve it in. Don't be afraid to let things about yoru character change. For example..
[17:52:38] 'Sugah: i get suspectious when people tell me fun.. tend to be things that cause we trouble
[17:53:39] You: A character who has been betrayed in the past meets up with sveral trustworthy nice characters---your character eventually should realize that people aren't all that bad and is a little more trusting, rather than remaining paranoid forever and ever while people are being nice to them. This is called Character Development.
[17:54:32] You: But also keep in mind that a character that was visciously attacked by a wolf isn't liable to go running up to pet the next wolf they see. Plausibility is a big factor.
[17:54:37] BrittanyBliss: ahhh good to hear since I've been developing mine.
[17:56:31] You: the biggest thing I can tell you is to keep the ooc, out of character drama away, seperate yourself from your character, and remember that roleplay is a game. It's supposed to be enjoyable. If your getting upset out of character, it's time to walk away for a few minutes and cool down. It's entirely permissable to take a break too. Sometimes rp can be frustrating when things don't go the way we want. Now, for character fun and to help you with your characters, I made some fun things for you all, use them, don't use them, but they are interesting, and can help you develope, and remember..your character.

[17:58:16] PearlGrey Resident accepted your inventory offer.
[17:58:36] You: your welcome Peri, these are entirely voluntary, but they can really help you figure out your foundation, your character.
[17:58:38] Mateem: Yup. And the thing to do is react as your character would.
[17:58:45] Leigh Luv: but will say as far as what Kev said about taking a break. It is always a good idea to take a break after an intense RP..
[17:58:53] You: Does anyone have any questions?
[17:59:10] Mateem: If they're the typical victorian? Horror. Fear. Disgust. Running to the police to report a suspicious person...
[17:59:35] 'Sugah: well i dont know how my character would act..
[17:59:55] Mateem: Think on it. What's their background, what was their upbringing?
[17:59:59] 'Sugah: my person would runaway screaming in terror.. but you know ..
    [18:00:05] Wren Noir: hehehe
[18:00:21] You: Sugah, I think maybe the notecards will help you, just a thought :) they are good at helping you figure things out. I made them that way
[18:00:25] Bathsheba Caru: Thank you Kev for the great class and Mateem and Leigh for your input as well you've all been very helpful
[18:00:37] Mateem: *cackles* Do it! It may make that character think twice about hauling around a weapon.
[18:00:47] Leigh Luv: waves and goes to get RL food
[18:00:55] Mateem: Or at least switch to something more civilized, like a pocket cannon
[18:00:59] Wren Noir: thank you all! :)
    [18:01:01] Mateem: >:}
[18:01:06] 'Sugah: okies..i will.. kev .thanks..

Hello - I just wanted to give a big thanks to Keighvin for posting this information. I took a few minutes today to answer all the questions and it really helped me remember things I wanted to do with my character, her stories, etc. Plus it made me laugh a bit. I strongly recommend EVERYONE do this exercise and more than once. Thanks again!
